Crawford Mack, an emerging Glaswegian songwriter, has released a compelling new single titled “Back From The Brink,” which marks the second offering from his highly anticipated EP, “Panic Attack.” This track stands out as a poignant examination of the human condition, articulating profound inquiries about divine interference in a world filled with turmoil.

Musically, “Back From The Brink” begins with a lo-fi filtered folk sensibility, gradually evolving into a rich tapestry of sound characterized by a dark bass synth and the rhythmic pulse of clock-like drums. The instrumentation is meticulously crafted, creating an immersive atmosphere that aligns with the introspective nature of the lyrics. Throughout the composition, Mack’s gentle and understated vocal delivery contrasts with the soaring piano-driven choruses, encapsulating the essence of the song’s introspective themes after the repeated phrase “back from the brink.”

The inspiration for the track stemmed from an evocative photograph of the Christ the Redeemer statue in San Salvador, from which Mack envisioned the figure reaching out to the moon. Engaging with this imagery, he adopts the perspective of an individual seeking answers from a higher power, grappling with issues of corruption and violence often justified in the name of faith. Notably, the song’s tone is one of agnosticism, presenting a sincere appeal for understanding rather than a confrontational challenge.

Co-produced alongside Jamie Evans and Rory James, the single features drumming contributions from Alex Reeves of Elbow, with expert mastering by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios. Complementing the track, a visually striking music video was filmed at the Asylum Chapel in Peckham, emphasizing a handcrafted replica of a stained glass window originally created by Mack’s ancestor, David Kier. As the video unfolds, the dimming light from the stained glass panes symbolizes the artist’s heartfelt plea for hope to persist within humanity’s journey.

In reflecting on his creative process, Mack shares, “I started writing this after seeing a photograph of the Christ the Redeemer statue in San Salvador… I wanted to ask why nobody’s intervening, while knowing that the question itself might be naive.” This sentiment captures the spirit of “Back From The Brink,” providing listeners a moment for contemplation while navigating the intricate questions surrounding existence.

As he looks ahead to the release of his EP “Panic Attack,” fans can anticipate more stirring music from Crawford Mack, wherein he continues to challenge conventional perceptions and evoke profound emotional responses.
