Echoes of Layers by Madis Muul fuses classical and Indian music influences in a compelling string quartet.

Composer and pianist Madis Muul brings a genre-defying new piece to listeners with the unveiling of String Quartet No. 1 “Echoes of Layers”, brought to life by the Muul Ensemble. Drawing from classical foundations and interwoven with subtle threads of Indian music, the composition invites reflection on both external nature and the inner self.

The concept of the quartet emerged during a solitary walk in nature. It is composed in three movements, each one exploring a different stage of natural and personal evolution:

  • Horizon. Unfolding – A broad beginning that develops detail over time.
  • Growth. Time – Refers to the 1910 film The Birth of a Flower by Percy Smith and mirrors biological patterns.
  • Depths. Cells – A sonic exploration of spirituality and internal reflection, drawing tonal qualities from the tampura.

Muul’s musical language is informed by his jazz education in Italy and composition training in the Netherlands, along with collaborative work with Giridhar Udupa, a renowned Indian percussionist.

His creative work has been recognized with the Estonian Theater Award (2022) and second place at the International Songwriting Awards, while the Estonian Jazz Awards acknowledged him as a sideman. All About Jazz has praised his style as “cosmic, tender, and deeply immersive.”

Muul is currently preparing to release String Quartet No. 2 in spring 2026, with plans for both pieces to be available on a limited vinyl edition.
