Robert dos Santos, writer and director, is set to redefine film distribution with his upcoming feature, “This Is How The World Ends,” poised to be the first straight-to-VHS release in two decades. This initiative by And Films marks a significant shift back towards physical media in a world increasingly dominated by digital streaming.

Historically viewed as a sign of subpar quality, the term “straight-to-VHS” has evolved. In an industry obsessed with metrics and algorithms, dos Santos seeks to reclaim this phrase as a badge of honor. He emphasizes this shift in a recent statement: “‘Straight to VHS used to be a slur in the 90s. But not anymore. Today it represents that your film is crafted with intention, and made for those who truly love films.”

The project challenges the prevailing trends of movie consumption, advocating for a return to tangible formats that foster a genuine connection with cinema. “In the digital world of AI, streaming, and downloads, we’ve lost touch with what it means to fall in love with cinema,” the filmmakers stated. They aspire to rekindle the joy of owning a physical film, reminiscent of the vinyl revival in music, promoting an experience that encourages audiences to engage with film on a personal level.

Set for release on June 7, 2026, coinciding with International VHS Day, “This Is How The World Ends” is more than just a nostalgic endeavor; it reflects contemporary cultural uncertainties and the ongoing discourse about the future of cinema. By stepping back into the realm of VHS, dos Santos hopes to ignite a wider movement in independent filmmaking, spearheading a return to physical formats that champions artistic intention over mere convenience.

Dos Santos best summarized this vision, stating, “This is a film that is made by humans, for humans. This is cinema you can hold, touch, and most importantly own.” As the industry evolves, this release is a compelling invitation for audiences to reconsider their relationship with film, ensuring that the art of cinema remains a cherished and tactile experience.
